“Vive la France!” is a common saying in French. In covered bonds, the vitality of French supply is an essential cornerstone for the whole market. French covered bonds made up almost 1/3 of total EUR supply in 2020 and are on the best path to achieving this outstanding position again this year. The post-Covid economic recovery in combination with the strong intention of the French government for a sustainable transition will present great opportunities but also challenges to the French banking industry. Moreover, inflation fears and a tapering discussion could be added to the mix later in the year. Last but not least, the covered bond directive will have to be implemented into French law by July 8th, 2021. No doubt, an eventful second half of the year is in front of us!
